802.11 / WiFi

The preferred approach when the power source supports it, WiFi leverages existing infrastructure and provides speed, range, versatility and interoperability. WiFi carries a cost premium, but this premium is decreasing rapidly with time. Real throughput in Mbits to 10's of Mbits per second is readily acheiveable for small microcontroller based embedded systems.
Bluetooth

When battery life is critical and data rates are moderate, Bluetooth provides a versatile and cost effective solution and supports interoperaiblity with other bluetooth products in many scenarios.
802.15.4
In low power applications where interoperability with products from other vendors isn't a requirement, custom solutions based on IEEE 802.15.4 allow for simple, cost effective designs. Real throughput in 10's of kbits per second is possible.
